Why Donate to NEST Community Learning Center?
NEST Community Learning Center lives and breathes on the shoulders of our volunteers and donors. We spend time, energy and resources, forming relationships with the demographic we want to serve, so that we understand their needs better.
We know that food, clothing, shelter, medical care and additional resources are critical for at-risk families. However, the only thing that will break the back of generational poverty is a job; and the only way to get a “sustaining” job is to be educated and learn the academic, technical, and social skills required. A result of regular and successful attendance at school.
As a society, teaching methods have not changed in 150 years, but the kids we teach have. The world is totally different; societal structure is different, home is different, what they are exposed to is different and the list goes on. And we wonder why we have kids falling off on either side of the median – it’s because we are not allowing many of them to learn the way they are naturally geared to learn. As a society, our educational system is focused on a one-size-fits-all approach. This fails those who fall outside the “norm”. Additionally, one-on-one attention is difficult to achieve.
The old saying goes, you can’t be everything to everybody. But when it comes to our families, NEST Community Learning Center can be.
We meet our students, typically one-on-one outside the bounds of traditional education, regardless of the program. Every student comes to NEST with a different educational background, challenges and strengths, family life and exposure to trauma. Having our one-on-one tutoring sessions conducted by experienced tutors who are also trained in trauma care is a significant step toward helping mold a better future for all our students.
Where do donations go?
We are incredibly efficient with our donations. We rely very heavily on our volunteers. Out of the 60-70 people that are regularly involved with NEST, only 20 of them are paid staff. Out of those, only 4 are full-time paid staff.
Outside of the payroll, most of our money goes towards maintaining our mobile tutoring fleet, educational supplies for our students, events, and food.
