The NEST Community Learning Center Online Program grew during the two years that COVID disrupted our school systems and therefore academic progress of all students. On the whole pre- COVID NEST kids struggled with school more than the average student but when learning went online, they struggled more.  During COVID we were taking them academic packets, other critical information from their school and food every day. We never missed a beat; but they were still struggling. Online was particularly difficult for NEST students; success depended on their virtual classroom environment (home access to an internet connection) and obviously their proficiency with technology. For those that had the ability / tools to connect from home it was easy, when they got frustrated, to just turn off their computer and not have engage.

During this time, we launched an online program where students can sign on and get one-on-one homework help and tutoring with our same well-trained tutoring staff. This allowed students to ask questions, engage with their mentors, and for us to check in with our students during difficult times.

Competitive Online Tutoring for Low-Income Students in Cincinnati

One of the lessons we learned during COVID is that many of our older (High School Age and Above) like our online program. A lot of the time, these older students are also earning income for their families – sometimes, they are their family’s biggest income source. Being able to adapt to meet students one-on-one for tutoring around their busy schedule is one of the major advantages of our developing the online program. It’s more attractive as an as-needed tool for high school students and beyond.

We returned to our standard programming after we came out of COVID – but we saw a continued need amongst our high-school students for this adapted tutoring opportunity. We’ve reached out to past tutors across the country, and they agreed to work with the kids on an as-needed basis.

The Unique Challenges of Online Childhood Education

If you are looking at an image of a child that is not related to you, that’s under 18; we have to be careful not to cross any lines. We’re subject to pedophilia laws. Because of that, we’re investing in paid tutors and monitors to make sure that any one-on-one education opportunity meets and exceeds any legal requirements designed to protect minors.

Our Commitment to Academic Outcomes

online tutoring

Many of the academic outcomes are similar to Afterschool Programming. Better grades, school attendance, academic skill retention, and overall academic scores. Outside the purely academic outcomes, many of these peer-led online tutoring programs have created a mentoring connection, where online tutors can connect with students that may have had a similar life story or at least have been trained in trauma informed care to appropriately handle some of the struggles these older students face.
